WAC Announces Exciting Lineup of Upcoming Art Classes

Boone, NC — Watauga Arts Council is thrilled to offer a variety of creative workshops this spring, providing opportunities for all ages and skill levels to explore new artistic mediums. From stained glass to oil painting, there's something for everyone! Here’s a look at the upcoming classes:

Hand Stitched Embroidery for Beginners
Adults only | February Thursdays | 6:30-8 pm | $75+
In this beginner-friendly class, students will learn basic embroidery stitches and complete their own project by the end of the 5 weeks. This class, taught by instructor Emma Jayne Smith, is ideal for anyone wanting to try embroidery for the first time and needs guidance. 

The Art of Oil Reduction
Adults only | February 8 | Variable Times | $125+
In this single-session workshop, students will create a monochrome oil reduction painting, learn to create a value map, then add color for a finalized piece with instructor Lindsay Carroll. Students should bring their own canvas in a size that feels most comfortable to them. 

Design and Paint a Barn Quilt
Adults only | March 1st - 2nd | Variable Times | $135+
Students will draw and paint a barn quilt design on a 2x2 foot aluminum composite board. This two-day workshop taught by Cinda Ebner covers the grid pattern, taping, and painting process, with optional upgrades for a 3x3 quilt.

Glass on Glass Mosaics
Adults only | March 7th and 12th | Variable Times | $50+
Create a 5x5” framed mosaic piece using colorful glass tesserae. No prior experience needed! This class, taught by instructor Cindy Michaud, will cover techniques for applying glass, grout, and creating beautiful light effects.

Mixed Media: The Art of Observation
Youth, ages 10-13 | March 18th - May 13th | 3:30-5pm | $5
Through nature walks and guided observation, students will create unique mixed media artworks by observing and reflecting on their surroundings. This 8-week class encourages self-expression and mindfulness for kids of any skill level.

Oil Painting in Layers
Adults only | April Thursdays | 6-8 pm | $100+
Over four sessions, Nicholas Thorp will guide students to explore oil painting techniques, with a particular focus on layering. Students will complete one layer of oil painting each week, ending with a finished, refined piece to take home at the end of the class session.

Needle Felting for Teens
Teens, ages 14-18 | April Wednesdays | 5:30-7:30pm | $60+
Teens can learn to needle felt a cute animal figurine in this beginner-friendly class. Instructor Sofia Salcedo will guide teens through the process, teaching the basics of this fun and creative craft.

Krista Holt

Krista is the admin at the Watauga Arts Council and a student from Appalachian State University studying Art History and Psychology. Initially a volunteer, Krista began working with WAC in September of 2024. She specializes in communications and event programming, including overseeing arts education operations.
