Nik Hermanovski
The son of two professional muralists, Nik Hermanovski was born and raised in Dallas, Texas where he grew up painting in his parent’s studio.
He attended an arts magnet high school, Booker T. Washington, where he developed his natural talent for ceramics. Hermanovski would then go on to study ceramics at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts before moving to New York City, where he worked for several artists, including: Natalie Weinberger, Emily Bode, Christopher Spitzmiller, Kevin Wilcoxson, and CJ Hendry. In 2021, Hermanovski moved to Boone, North Carolina to pursue his own studio practice. Around that time, he began experimenting with turning his ceramics into lighting fixtures, and has since developed a strong fascination with combining aesthetics and functionality in the form of sculptural lamps.
The Story Behind The Work
“I am interested in making new shapes and forms. I embrace the physical properties of clay, and its response to structural alterations. I combine wheel-thrown forms, sacrificing their individual attributes to serve a new whole. This creative form of destruction leaves the new composite piece in an unpredictable state, requiring me to work improvisationally. Although I plan and draft before the work begins, no piece can be truly premeditated. Each sculpture becomes a new experience, demanding the constant development of my technique, on and off the wheel. My work (or practice) aims to express the absurdity of reality through the contrast of elegant craft and free play.”
