Upcoming Artist Talk at Betty’s Biscuits
The Watauga Arts Council is excited to launch a new Artist Talk Series, creating opportunities for our community to hear directly from artists about their work, creative process, inspiration, and experiences.
Kicking off the series is artist Nysie Hurst, whose exhibition, Mountains Waking, Phoenix Rising, is currently on view in WAC’s Flex Room Gallery.
Artist Talk Event Info
On Wednesday, October 7, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., WAC will present an Artist Talk with Nysie at Betty’s Biscuits. Guests will have the opportunity to hear more about the experiences behind the exhibition, Nysie’s artistic process, and the ways her creative practice has evolved throughout her journey. There will be time to mingle as well as a Q&A, paired with a short interactive activity.
While the full exhibition will remain on view at WAC’s Flex Room Gallery, select pieces will be temporarily transported to Betty’s Biscuits for viewing during the Artist Talk before returning to WAC.
Light food and wine will be available for purchase from Betty’s Biscuits during the event.

About Mountains Waking, Phoenix Rising
Rooted in Nysie Hurst’s experience living with Multiple Sclerosis and inspired by the changing light of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Mountains Waking, Phoenix Rising is a visual and emotional journey through illness, adaptation, creativity, and renewal. Sunrise serves as a recurring source of inspiration throughout her body of work, motivating her even in dark moments.

Working through layered acrylics, watercolor, expressive marks, and abstraction, Nysie seeks to capture not an exact representation of the landscape, but the emotional imprint of being there, including the energy of light, the rhythm of breath, and the possibility of beginning again. While the works carry her own story, they also leave space for viewers to bring their own memories, feelings, and experiences of renewal.
