The Story Behind The Work

“I paint and design stoneware pottery with my mouth. I am paralyzed from the neck down. With technical support from Mr. Eric Reichard, I paint pottery by holding a paintbrush with my mouth. Over time, I have also gained the ability to design pieces using the computer. I create shapes with an app called "Let's Make Pottery." The app makes it possible to design pottery on a virtual pottery wheel with my mouth stick. I create three-dimensional images on a computer and send them to Eric, who brings each shape to life on a pottery wheel. I receive each piece as bisque and paint them, using cone 6 underglazes before glaze firing.

The process expands the expressive potential of clay by combining ancient and adaptive technologies. Additionally, I feel that my connection to the medium is not just unique. The process is a form of medicine that brings joy not only to myself but also to others who encounter it. Transferring my energy through the brush onto the clay body is beyond therapeutic. This process has been a meaningful connection to my community and people around the world. My work on exhibit demonstrates the power of resilience and adaptation regardless of extraordinary circumstances. It shows that there is life after catastrophe, beauty in the Earth, and purification through Fire. I consider myself privileged beyond measure and grateful to share these gifts.”
