Susan Harkins

Harkins has enjoyed painting for the past ten years in pastel, watercolor, and oil, while currently experimenting with acrylic and mixed media.

Since moving to the High Country five years ago, Harkins has discovered the joy of painting outdoors. Known as Plein Air painting, or painting “in the open air,” this immersive and emotional experience allows Harkins to be fully present as she interprets the natural scenery around her. Plein Air painting can be very meditative and joyful, but also presents challenges, such as changes in lighting and environmental factors. You can usually find Harkins painting weekly throughout the warmer seasons with the High Country Plein Air Painters at parks, overlooks, farms, and local wineries.

“My wish is that my art offers a ‘moment of peace’ to calm the soul; encouraging you to step outside and truly see and feel the beauty of the High Country with new eyes.” - S. Harkins, 2026
