Class Information:
This course will take students from drawing to completed painting using basic layering techniques with oil paint. Students will begin their work with the grid method of drawing to achieve precise proportion. From there, students will learn how to block in a basic underpainting working from darks to lights to mid-tones. Subsequent layers will build opacity and detail, and the instructor will demonstrate her use of scumbling to build complex-colors.
Required supplies:

Required supplies:
- Reference Photo. The photo should be set to a 3:4 ratio, either printed (with good color retention) or digital (with a device to reference from such as an ipad). Students can email the instructor their photo beforehand if they need help creating the ratio and/or printing.
- Canvas. One 18" x 24" canvas, OR one 12" x 16" canvas, OR two 9" x 12" canvases. Students who feel that they paint faster should go for the bigger sizes. Students who are unsure can start with an 11 x 14 and can add the second 11 x 14 if they finish their first painting quickly.
- Brushes and Palette Knife. A variety of brushes from size 0-12 with varying stiffness. Be sure that some brushes are on the stiffer side. Rounds and filberts are great. Flats and brights will be very useful too. NOTE: Oil brushes should not be used for other painting mediums. Lindsay’s favorite brands include:
- Miller’s Golden Fleece Rounds sizes 0-6 (from Cheap Joe’s)
- Black Silver flats and brights, all sizes, (from Cheap Joe’s, great for stiffness)
- Rosemary pure sable rounds and filberts, all sizes, (from Rosemary, UK)
- Kolinsky sable brights, all sizes, (from Jerry’s Artarama).

About the Instructor
Lindsay Carroll is a portrait and figurative artist based in the High Country of North Carolina. Lindsay is a member of the Portrait Society of America, a sponsored artist through Cheap Joe’s ambassadorship program, a featured artist in Painters of Ashe County, and the recipient of numerous awards for artworks featured in local juried exhibitions. The current oil works of Lindsay Carroll portray "form uncovered." Nudes - her primary subject matter - take center stage in these works which have been described as "smooth," "dramatic," "detailed," and “realistic.” Inspired by contemporary realist artists such as Megan Elizabeth Reed and Roberto Ferri, Lindsay's work embraces a dramatic tone - aided by the careful consideration of where light and shadow fall in her compositions.
