Classes: 4 total, on June 6, 13, 20, and 27th
Days and times: Mondays, 1-3 pm Age Range: 14-114 years-old Cost: $100 if you bring your own supplies, $135 to use class supplies. Class Description: The Zen Buddhist monks introduced the Northern Sung style of painting to Japan during the Muromachi period in the 14th century. During the Shogunate era, the Southern Sung style flourished. You will learn the basic strokes of traditional Japanese Sumi-e painting, bamboo, orchid, plum blossom as well as Bonsai tree, flowers, and birds. We will also paint the royal flower of Japan, the chrysanthemum. If you are continuing classes from a previous set you will be given additional activities that will align with your level of progression. |
About the Instructor
Susan Wilders had the privilege of studying Sumi-e from Mr. Chow Chian-Chiu and Mrs. Chow Leung Chen-Ying. She attended classes with and Zang Shou-Chen of the China Institute in New York City and Nig Yeh from Huntington Beach California.
Her work has been influenced by various artists of the Japanese Kano School, as well as Ni Tsan of the Chinese Yuan dynasty and the more contemporary Chinese Lingnan School. She has been painting for over 25 years.
She was artist in residence for 17 years at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach Florida. Susan has given lectures and workshops at the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach Florida. Her works are in collections throughout the United States. She was an Artist in Residence at the Edgewood Cottage in Blowing Rock and has given workshops at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum. She is a member of the Sumi-e Society of America.
