Lost and Found: Making Sculpture from Found Objects and Materials
October 24-November 21
Join local artist Mark Edwards aka Pop Jones to explore the foundations of sculpture using found objects. Students will use found objects and variety of tools and materials to create sculptures of their own design. Explore a variety of idea generating methods such as dream recording to unlock your creativity. Students can expect to produce one sculpture per session and conclude the course with a student exhibition. Students should bring their own leather construction gloves and an N95 mask to each class.
About the Artist:
Mark Edwards works as a sculptor in metal, wood, paper, and electronic systems (controlling light and sound), and as a filmmaker. He is currently working on Hellbendr, a folk opera.
His work reflects his interest in systems theory and he treats each work, even narrative, as a system. Since a system might not have a conventional form, he is looking at robots and AI as structures to explore.
His sculpture and photography has been exhibited in North Carolina and Virginia and is in private collections. His film work has been shown on PBS, toured in Virginia and shown at festivals and universities.
He lives on a river in the mountains of North Carolina. The river features prominently in Hellbendr and is likely to run through more work in the future.
