North Carolina Folklore Society, Durham
The N.C. Folklore Society is accepting nominations for the 2012 Brown-Hudson Awards and the Community Traditions Awards. The Brown-Hudson Award honors outstanding contributions to the transmission and appreciation of folklife in N.C. from traditional artists, musicians and other practitioners of folklife, as well as educators, entrepreneurs, folklorists, documentarians and advocates. The Community Traditions Award recognizes groups, organizations and institutions that engage in or promote folklife.

Performing Arts/Presenters

South Arts, Atlanta, Ga.
South Arts invites performing arts presenters in its nine-state region to submit an application to participate in the Dance Touring Initiative from summer 2012 to fall 2015. Presenter participants will receive intensive professional development, peer mentorship and tour development assistance, as well as substantial touring subsidies to engage modern dance and contemporary ballet companies for residencies and performances.

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents its juried competition open to all two-dimensional artists including photographers. San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, San Francisco, Calif.
The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District announces an RFQ for the new Warm Springs Station extension project. Art approaches include architecturally scaled art glass installations for the curtain wall and entry pavilion, surface treatments for the concrete columns in the plaza, and surface treatment for the concrete seating areas at the existing Fremont station. Budget depends upon the medium but ranges from $80,000 to $984,000. Entries must be submitted through www.callforentry.org.

City of Dallas, Tex.
The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas requests qualifications for a public art project at the future Elm Fork Soccer Complex. Preference will be given to artists who demonstrate the ability to work with renewable resources that will have a minimal impact on the environment. The commission can be for a single artwork or a series of smaller works depending on the artist’s plan. The total budget for the project is $134,000.

Artists are invited to submit artwork for the 2012 Bridgeton RiverFest poster contest. The winning selection will appear on all posters promoting the event to be held Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, 2012, and the artist will be the featured artist of the festival.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Mass.
Photo Nights Boston seeks to draw attention to the city’s landmark historic buildings with large-scale outdoor projections. An artist will be selected to design and produce a photography-based work of public art as a focal point for the program. This opportunity is open to artists 18 years of age or older with no geographic restriction. The project budget is $10,000, and finalists will receive a $1,000 proposal development fee.

Dogwood Arts Festival, Knoxville, Tenn.
The Dogwood Arts Festival has issued a call to artists for the 2012 Regional Fine Arts Exhibition to take place Friday, April 6, through Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Emporium Center for Arts and Culture. Fine art encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by jury. Artists within a 300 mile radius of Knoxville may enter. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Charlotte Art League will host the third annual Art Beyond Sight exhibition Friday, Oct. 7, through Saturday, Oct. 29. Art Beyond Sight features artists who are visually impaired or sighted artists who are inspired to make art for people with no vision or low vision. It is a tactile show; other senses can be employed in the piece as well. The exhibition is part of National Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month in October. All entries are accepted.

The Duke Center for Eating Disorders, Durham
The Duke Center for Eating Disorders is accepting submissions for the second annual Silent Auction and Art Show to be held Thursday, Nov. 10, at the West End Wine Bar in Durham. HandMade in America Expands Craft Labs to Stecoah Valley and the Energy Exchange

 

Burnsville, NC and Stecoah Valley, NC: The Craft Lab, a series of monthly lectures given by the staff at HandMade in America has engaged craft artists of all levels to take their work to new heights. Offered the second Tuesday of each month at HandMade in America in Downtown Asheville, the success of the workshops have created a demand for classes in Stecoah and Burnsville..

 

A variety of workshops help tackle problems the career artist often experiences. Topics include how to best display their work, engage visitors, increase sales, how to create a budget and price your work.  A morning and afternoon class will be held each day at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center at 121 Schoolhouse Road in the Stecoah Community between Bryson City and Fontana Dam.  Lunch can be purchased in the Schoolhouse Café in between sessions. Regional Artist Project Grants 2011–2012
Artists in participating North Carolina counties may apply for funding to pursue projects that further their career development. Grant amounts vary by region and project, but usually range between $500 and $2,000. Eligible projects include the creation of new work, purchase of supplies and materials, professional development workshops, travel support related to research or study, and production of promotional materials, including websites, CDs, DVDs and brochures. Deadlines are set by each region, with several in August and September.

Piedmont Council of Traditional Music (PineCone), Raleigh
The PineCone Bluegrass Radio Show has been on the air for more than 22 years. Every Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. on 94.7 WQDR, the PineCone Bluegrass Radio Show broadcasts bluegrass music, old and new. The Upstate Book Project, Spartanburg, S.C.
The Upstate Book Project is a collaborative art and writing project connecting 30 artists throughout the Upstate region (S.C.). Applications will be accepted from artists residing in the N.C. Counties of Polk and Rutherford and the S.C. counties of Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Laurens, Pickens, Spartanburg and Union. Selected artists will be required to write a 100-word or less storyline and then create an 18″ x 24″ vertical illustration to accompany the storyline. The final product will be a completed book in bound magazine format containing the entire story.

The Department of English at California State University is accepting manuscripts of poetry to be considered for the Philip Levine Prize. Zion National Park is currently accepting applications for the 2011–2012 artist-in-residence program. The program provides selected artists with the opportunity to live in Zion Canyon for four weeks and devote their time and energy to developing works of art inspired by the park. As part of the residency, artists will present two public programs and donate, at the park’s choosing, an original piece of artwork that represents their experience within the park. The Association of Performing Arts Presenters announces a two-year extension of the Cultural Exchange Fund, a travel subsidy program supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Cultural Exchange Fund awards subsidies to individual presenting professionals including agents, managers, producers, presenting organizations and groups of presenting professionals traveling to see the work of artists and companies, or to develop and advance projects with international artists and their collaborators. North Carolina Poetry Council
The N.C. Poetry Council sponsors annual poetry contests in nine different categories, including best N.C. book of poetry, free verse, traditional form, humorous verse and performance poetry. Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is currently accepting proposals for its 2012 season of site-specific artist installations. Maximum funding is $7,500 per project. The Saluda Arts Festival is planning an increase in its media coverage that will draw more than ever the number of visitors to the festival.  Media advertising is being planned with local print, radio, and TV commercials throughout Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina.

One Leg Up
Based in Asheville, North Carolina, One Leg Up performs a vibrant mixture of upbeat Gypsy Jazz, Latin, Swing and original jazz compositions and is a favorite of club, concert, and festival stages throughout the southeastern United States.

Swayback Sisters
The Swayback Sisters are Laura Blackley, Nikki Talley & Lyndsay Wojcik. This Asheville based roots trio decided to join forces and create a diverse musical experience for themselves as well as their audiences. While each Sister is proficient in her songwriting and crafty guitar work, the real treat is the blending of their voices in three-part harmony.
 
This is a juried art event offering over $1,500 cash awards to a diverse range of 2D and 3D artwork.

Southern Circuit is the nation's only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. All entries will be adjudicated by a panel of filmmakers and choreographers, and selected works will be screened during the 2011 ADF. Entry fee applies.
