Blowing Rock Stage Company Announces a Scenic Art Contest
The Blowing Rock Stage Company has announced that it will be conducting an art contest in conjunction with its October 2008 production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
First prize is $250 and the winner will have their work incorporated into the final design of the play. The competition is open to all high school and college students in Watauga County. Students from surrounding counties (Avery, Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell, Catawba, Burke) are also encouraged to apply.
“The Tempest is our annual Theatre-for-Schools play and this year it is going to be a multi-media production,” said Kenneth Kay, Producing Artistic Director of the Stage Company. “That means we plan to incorporate traditional scenic elements with visual projections that will give the play a fresh look and create some real excitement for our audiences.”
“Stylistically, we want the illustrations we use to resemble the kind drawings that can be seen in such comics as “Star Wars Legacy” or “Captain America,” Kay explained.
Entrants will first be asked to submit a drawing in the requested style. Several finalists will then be chosen and asked to illustrate specific parts of The Tempest. The winner will be chosen by members of BRSC’s production staff.
“This is a rare opportunity for a young regional artist,” said Kay. “The winner will work alongside a professional designer and ultimately see their artwork projected into the overall design of the play.”
The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2008. The winner will be announced later in the summer.
All suitable artwork from the non-winning entrants will be displayed in the lobby of the Hayes Performing Arts Center during the run of The Tempest.
For complete contest details and an official entry application please contact Kenneth Kay at 828-295-9168, ext 2.

Friday, March 7:
A-B Tech Resources for Small Business: Learn about the A-B Tech Small Business Center/Business Incubator and the many FREE business resources that are available within our community. Instructor, Jill Sparks.
Anything You Want to Know About Business: Participate in an open business forum. Facilitator, Tim Barrett, founding partner of Blue Prints for Business.
Introduction to Working in the Building Industry: Learn the basic tools craft artists need to work in the field: reading blueprints, interpreting construction documents, OSHA safety regulations, and researching building codes. Artists will learn which of these skills they need to develop thoroughly to be successful in their potential niche in the building industry. Instructor, John Gernandt, a woodworker and gallery owner who has worked in the building industry for much of his career.
Working with Interior Designers: Learn how a designer is trained and professionally certified, how to approach a designer, what are typical design projects, and Top 10 Lies told to Naïve Artists and Designers. Instructor, interior designer Lish Helgeson, whose work has been featured on HGTV.
Marketing to the Industry: Learn what architects, builders, developers, and interior designers are looking for and how to best present their work to each segment of the industry. While an interior designer may be seeking a one-of-a-kind piece for a client, developers may be looking for an artist who can produce 20 similar bar sinks. Artists will learn how to direct their marketing efforts to get the results they want. Instructor, Lynette Miller
Professional Practices in Architecture and Construction: Participation in the design and construction of a building is a team effort, requiring cooperative and professional interactions. Many craft artists are used to working in an isolated environment in which their work and communication idiosyncrasies do not significantly affect other people. For successful participation in an architectural project, craft artists must understand and play by the professional codes of conduct that are commonly accepted in the design and construction worlds. Instructor, architect Ken Czarnomski, Chair of the Construction Management program at A-B Tech.
Saturday, March 8:
Hands-On Computer Lab Session, using software for business and design that is either free or inexpensive.
Hands-On Construction Activities Session, taught by Tim Hanlon, head of the Decorative Restoration Program at A-B Tech.

Posted October 18, 2007: 2008 Economic Impact Study of the Craft Industry
Attachments: Survey (in PDF) ConsumerCraft Survey (in PDF) Study Overview
For Crafts Artists
There are three ways we are approaching Craft Artists to get them to complete the artist survey for the 2008 Economic Impact Study of the Craft Industry:
2. Approaching artists personally. Jon Elenbogen gave this Oct 13th to the potters at the Spruce Pine show and Stoney Lamar is coming to the Southern Highlands Craft Show on Saturday, Oct 20. Both these craft artists know how important this study of the western North Carolina craft industry is to everyone.
3. Mailing a hardcopy of the survey, one sheet legal size, two-sided. (attached) to be returned by December 13th.
Toe River Arts Council has 600 on their mailing list but available only with labels, and only half have email. They will provide the labels and we will mail hard copies to this list, and TRAC is handing out surveys as artists bring work to the show prior to the Dec. 2nd Open Studio tour. The staff of TRAC is making every effort to impress on the artists how important it is for them to send in the survey.
For the survey of craft consumers
It is the consumer who BUYS CRAFT in western North Carolina, but LIVES elsewhere that makes the biggest difference to the economy and therefore this economic impact survey.
Everyone who fills out the survey, no matter where they live, gets a raffle ticket for the following:
$200 Blue Spiral 1 $200 New Morning Gallery
$100 Bellagio Art to Wear $100 Bellagio Everyday
$100 Penland Gallery $50 Grove Arcade ARTS & Heritage Gallery
$50 Allanstand Craft Shop at the Folk Art Center
$50 Grovewood Gallery
The raffle will be drawn December 15th so all raffle tickets must be in to the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design by December 13
If you are willing to collect consumer surveys, I will provide you with the number of surveys you need, plus a sign about the raffle and the raffle tickets.
Please let me know ASAP if you can help collect these surveys and if so how many you would like me to get to you.

(Greenville, NC) After a long, hot summer, a weekend on the North Carolina coast with crisp fall weather is just what the doctor ordered, especially if you're a photographer and love the outdoors. Bald Head Island is a special place, filled with many natural treasures to explore and photograph.
The 1st Annual Bald Head Island Photography Workshop will feature presentations such as Shooting the Sweet Light, Lens Selection and the Creative Process, Basic Image Editing Tips & Techniques and Composition for Stronger Images by freelance nature photographers Jamie Konarski Davidson and Skip Pudney. Participants will learn how to make their equipment work better for them, improve photography skills, such as exposure and composition, and flex their creative wings whether their artistic tools are film or digital.

Posted September 26, 2007: Certification Workshop for Craft Artists
HandMade in America and A-B Tech Partner to Present
Craft in the Building Industry Certification Program
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – As part of Handmade in America’s new Craft, Architecture, and Design program, HandMade and A-B Tech are collaborating to offer a certification workshop for craft artists who want to expand their businesses by producing custom work for the construction and design industries. The first 6-hour course will be taught on Wednesday, October 3, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM at HandMade’s Craft Design Lab at 125 S. Lexington Avenue in Asheville. Pre-Registration is required, and may be done in one of three ways: (1) Online, using a Visa or MasterCard at www.abtech.edu/ce/registration/default.asp; (2) by downloading a copy of the registration form and faxing or mailing it in along with the registration fee, or (3) in person by visiting the Continuing Education Business office at A-B Tech’s Asheville, Madison or Enka campus. The course ID# is MKT-3425-203. Cost of the workshop is $50.
Quote from Jenny Moore: “This workshop grew out of interviews HandMade conducted with artists, architects, interior designers, and builders. Artists wanted to know how to navigate a market that was new to them. Building and design practitioners wanted to know that the artists they commissioned understood the basics of building codes, reading blueprints, and the demands of a construction schedule. And they all felt that the course needed to be taught by individuals who had worked in the field. We are delighted that A-B Tech has been able to provide what we needed at such a reasonable cost.”
Quote from Nancy Troxler, Coordinator, Technical and Industrial Training Programs, A-B Tech Community College: "A-B Tech welcomes the opportunity to partner with HandMade in America to design and deliver certificate programs that will enhance and expand craft in our region's building industry."
Course description:
Best Business Practices: Participants will learn about the A-B Tech Small Business Center/Business Incubator and the many free business resources that are available within our community. The seminar will address the fundamentals of a business plan and why this is critical to any business.
Architecture, Building, and Interior Design Basics: An introduction to the basic tools craft artists need to work in the field: reading blueprints, interpreting construction documents, OSHA safety regulations, and researching building codes. Artists will learn which of these skills they need to learn more thoroughly for their potential niche in the industry.
Marketing to the Industry: Craft artists will discover what architects, builders, developers, and interior designers are looking for and how to best present their work to each segment of the industry. While an interior designer may be seeking a one-of-a-kind piece for a client, developers may be looking for an artist who can produce 20 similar bar sinks. Artists will learn how to direct their marketing efforts to get the results they want.
Professional Practices: Participation in the design and construction of a building is a team effort, requiring cooperative and professional interactions. Many craft artists are used to working in an isolated environment in which their work and communication idiosyncrasies do not significantly affect other people. To successfully participate in an architectural project, craft artists must understand and play by the professional codes of conduct that are commonly accepted in the design and construction worlds.

Posted September 18, 2007: Fellowships for N.C. Artists Jump to $10,000, Application Deadline Nov. 1, 2007
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 18, 2007) — The North Carolina Arts Council will accept applications for the 2008–09 artist fellowship awards in visual arts, craft, film and video, and choreography until November 1, 2007. Fellowship awards have increased from $8,000 to $10,000 and include a new category for craft artists.
With support from the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Arts Council’s fellowship stipend will increase from $8,000 to $10,000 beginning with the grants awarded for the 2007–08 cycle. This is the first increase in the fellowship award in more than 15 years.
This year, for the first time, craft artists will be able to apply for the award in their own category. Interested applicants should visit www.ncarts.org for requirements. All applicants will go through an online application process.
“Since the inception of the program in 1980, craft artists have applied in the visual arts category,” explained Jeff Pettus, Visual Arts Director. “With the growing strength and numbers of craft artists in North Carolina, we felt it was time to recognize craft specifically in the fellowship awards.”
Film, craft, and visual artists and choreographers are eligible to apply this year through the online application, which is currently available and due November 1.
The new online application will allow artists to store digital images and work samples, save user profile information and streamline the application process. The information stored in N.C. Culture Grants Online can be updated as changes occur and retrieved for various Arts Council applications and opportunities. Artists may also save a work-in-progress application, accessible through any Web browser.
Arts Council staff will work closely with applicants during their process to ensure a smooth transition from written to online applications. Showcase Artists Sought for ArtsMarket, Premiere Performing Arts Showcase
Raleigh, N.C. (May 30, 2007) —
The North Carolina Arts Council is accepting showcase applications for ArtsMarket, one of the top performing arts showcase and booking conferences in the nation. Applications should be received in the Arts Council office no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.
Cosponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council and the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, the biennial ArtsMarket will bring more than 500 performing artists, agents and booking coordinators to High Point November 5–7, 2007.
The showcase and booking conference features exceptional performances by state and national musicians, dancers and other performers, an exciting exhibit hall and an opportunity to network with representatives of presenting organizations, performing artists, agents and artist managers. More than 35 juried showcases and 150 exhibitors will be featured.
“ArtsMarket is a national model for a successful performing arts showcase,” said Mary B. Regan, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council. “We are delighted to be able to showcase so many talented touring artists from North Carolina and across the country.”
Intended for organizations that book all types of performers for regular season programming and special events like street festivals and fairs, the conference draws representatives from arts centers, colleges and universities, schools, local arts councils, civic groups and other organizations from across North Carolina and beyond.
Artists selected to showcase their work will have fifteen minutes of performance time. Artistic quality and professional touring capability are the primary factors determining the selection of showcase artists. Beyond these essential ingredients, the selection panel will take into consideration the following criteria to create the overall showcase programs: diversity of art forms; racial, ethnic and geographic diversity; range of fees to accommodate presenters of varying budgets and venue sizes; mix of North Carolina and out-of-state performers; and a mix of artistic representation and management. The selection panel will also give preference to artists who did not showcase at the 2005 ArtsMarket.
Artists applying for showcase time should submit a narrative, work sample and nonrefundable registration fee of $10. Applications should be received in the Arts Council office no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2007. Notification of selection decisions will be mailed by September 5, 2007.
