Dear Book-Arts Friends,
As some of you may already know, on August 14 (Saturday) I'll be offering a day-long "Pamphlet-Stitched Books" workshop at the Florence Memorial Art School, in scenic Glendale Springs, NC. This lovely, simple binding technique offers countless creative possibilities, and I enjoy continually trying out new variations with it. In the workshop, everyone will have an opportunity to complete at least two books, and I'll be providing handouts with instructions for the pamphlet-stitching techniques we discuss. Here's the description:
August 14, 2010---registration deadline: July 30
“Simple Elegance: Pamphlet-Stitched Book Variations”
1 day, $90 (lunch provided)
With simple, versatile hand-sewing techniques, participants can create elegant “pamphlet-stitched” books—ideal for poetry chapbooks or small books combining artwork and writing, since they involve a single signature (a single group of nested pages sewn to a cover). After we've discussed basic bookmaking terms and key paper characteristics, participants will prepare the pages and cover for their first blank book, then learn a stitching pattern for the binding. In the afternoon they will make another book, using a different pamphlet stitch. As time allows, other stitching variations will be discussed, and participants may add unique touches to their book covers.
You can see an example of a pamphlet-stitched book and download a materials list for this workshop at
http://www.florencethomas.org/sharon-sharp.html
(Just so you know, the Florence staff wrote that glowing blurb about my work, which I appreciate!)
Registration details are available at
http://www.florencethomas.org/class-registration.html
A reminder: the registration deadline is this coming Friday, July 30, 2010.
Since the field of book arts has grown rapidly in recent years, I'll also have on hand my copies of many books about bookmaking, so that you can look through them and get ideas for additions to your library or to your public-library request list.
If any of your friends might be interested in the August 14 class, please feel free to forward this e-mail to them. Also, if you have any questions about the class plans or needed supplies, please contact me. I hope to share a day of bookmaking pleasures with you soon at the Florence Art School!
Good summertime wishes,
Sharon

The deadline for digital submissions to be received is Friday, June 25, 2010.
Works will be juried through a unique process: all works submitted (digital images only) will be posted anonymously on a public Web site with the title, size, and medium of the submitted work. Three sectors of people will be asked to vote for their top five selections from among all of the entries: 1) a panel of five jurors from outside of the Greater Knoxville; 2) individual members of the Arts & Culture Alliance (approximately 300 people); and 3) the general public. The 15 works receiving the most number of votes from EACH sector will be displayed at the Emporium Center. The panel of jurors includes: Mark Hall (Maryville College Art Department); Nandini Makrandi (Curator of Contemporary Art, Hunter Museum); Jeff Morton (Covenant College Art Department); Elizabeth Snipes (Missouri State University Department of Art and Design); and Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart (Belmont University Department of Art).
The call for entries is open to all artists. Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting, Graphic Arts, 3-D, and Photography. Entry fees are $7 per piece for unlimited entries. Download a prospectus and application at www.knoxalliance.com (under Artist Calls & Press Releases), or contact Suzanne Cada, Arts & Culture Alliance, (865) 523-7543, sc@knoxalliance.com. Three People’s Choice Cash Awards will be given at the First Friday reception.
