A Common Heritage |
A
Common Heritage: the Music & Stories of North Carolina is a week-long
program for fourth graders that explores the music and stories of North
Carolina. Through performances and residency work, artists guide students
in exploring similarities and differences among the three regions of our
state and the creation of students’ own stories and songs about
North Carolina.
Our last program was held August 22—26, 2005. Storyteller Dianne Hackworth and musician John Fowler worked with Lynn Gordon’s fourth graders at Cove Creek Elementary and Anne Younce’s fourth graders at Bethel Elementary. The students created some wonderfully unique stories and songs about their home state. And all fourth graders in the county saw performances by Dianne and John that week in the schools. We hope to revive this program in 2007—2008, possibly expanding it to include other grade levels. We will be seeking sponsorships in the
