The Watauga County Arts Council presents its 2006 Summer Arts Camp featuring Missoula Children’s Theatre. This year’s Missoula production will be The The Jungle Book. Check out the Summer Arts Camp section below for information and application forms!

The Community Arts in Education Partnership of Watauga County (CAEP), consisting of the Watauga County Arts Council, Watauga County Schools, and Appalachian State University's Office of Arts and Cultural Programs, enables young people to have direct involvement with the arts and artists. It provides opportunities for increased learning in and through the arts for the children and youth of Watauga County, for the adults in their lives, and for the adult learners in the community. The CAEP advocates for arts in education among the stakeholders who have influence over education policies and funding, including the school board, school administrators, teachers, and parents.

This unique partnership was formalized in 1998 when the Watauga County Arts Council, Watauga County Schools, and Appalachian State University's Office of Cultural Affairs joined forces to fund and manage a Community Arts Education Coordinator for the county. The coordinator is responsible for coordinating the needs of the community with the programs offered by the three partners. The partnership has led to a sharing of resources, new and expanded programming, and the development of a strategic plan for improved arts in education activities in the area, both for children and adults.

Community Arts in Education programming includes:

Mountain Arts Program (MAP)

The Mountain Arts Program (MAP) offers schools subsidized, week-long residencies with regional artists. MAP artists work with five core groups of students during the residency week, guiding them in hands-on arts experiences in everything from the visual arts to creative movement, storytelling to music, and weaving to bookmaking.

A Common Heritage

A Common Heritage; the Music & Stories of North Carolina is a week-long program for fourth graders that explores the music and stories of North Carolina. Through performances and residency work, artists guide students in exploring similarities and differences among the three regions of our state and the creation of students’ own stories and songs about North Carolina.

Creating Original Opera (COO)

Creating Original Opera is a unique interdisciplinary program offering children the opportunity to participate in every aspect of creating and producing an original piece of musical theatre. This program has been done at Mabel, Blowing Rock, and Hardin Park Schools and will be expanded to include one new school each year.
demonstrations, and concerts...just to name a few.

Fourth Grade Storytelling Festival

The Fourth Grade Storytelling Festival is held each year for all fourth grade students at Hickory Ridge Homestead. Local storytellers share new and traditional stories from the Appalachian region and the world, and students receive living history tours of Hickory Ridge Homestead as well.

Blue Ridge ArtSpace Workshops & Classes will be offered for the general community (both children and adults) at the new ArtSpace facility, as well as other community venues. Offerings will include a variety of disciplines, for a variety of ability levels.

Additional Community Programs for the general public (children and adults) vary from year to year, but have included performances by both local and touring artists, literary readings, lectures, demonstrations, and concerts by local musicians...just to name a few.
